How to Get Over PCD

Are you intrigued by the title? Fret not; there isn’t a personal computer depression…yet, but who knows? With the technology we have nowadays, the possibilities are endless. However, what does PCD really mean?

According to the urbandictionary.com, PCD or Post Concert Depression is, “the feeling of depression after going to a really good concert. Usually involves depression over the fact that your lives purpose is now fulfilled after seeing your favorite band. Also can involve depression over the fact that you might not see that band for a long time.”

There we have it. Most of us teenagers know what it feels like to attend a concert of your favorite artist, and it really is beyond words of description. Trust me, the first words I exclaimed upon seeing my favorite band One Direction were, "Oh my gosh! They're real!" and even after the concert, my mouth seemed like a broken record, still stating those words.

Having a severe case of PCD, in my opinion, is worse than having your heart broken over your crush that rejected you and even humiliated you in public, trust me. Nothing's worse than going back to the place where the concert you've attended took place and hallucinating that your favorite artists are still there, performing. How about waking up in the morning feeling all giddy as you think you'll be heading to another concert but realizing that everything's already over?

If I were to go on with all of the PCD's 'symptoms', I might go on enumerating forever. And besides, the symptoms vary on from one fan to another, depending on how you've prepared or enjoyed the concert.

Anyway, enough with the fangirl feels. How does one simply get over this special kind of depression?

Let's have it expressed by different song lyrics appropriate for each step.

Step 1: Indulge
I wanna take you away.
Let's escape into the music,
DJ, let it play.
I just can't refuse it.
Like the way you do this,
Keep on rocking to it.
Please don't stop the-
Please don't stop the-
Please don't stop the music.
-- Please Don't Stop the Music, Rihanna

Of course, before anything else or might as well move on, nothing's wrong with reliving the moment for a while. Who wouldn't want to experience the same type of euphoria you felt when you heard your idols sing their opening song as you listen to the song on your way to school? No one! Little things like those are still worth it to go through, even though oftentimes it'll leave you smiling like an idiot.

Step 2: Accept

When you're gone
The pieces of my heart are missing you
When you're gone
The place I came to know is missing too
When you're gone
The words I need to hear to always get me through the day
And make it okay
I miss you.
-- When You're Gone, Avril Lavigne

Perhaps this is the most difficult step of getting over your PCD - accepting that they're gone, your money paid for the concert ticket has reached its due, they're leaving, and having the afterthought that you won't see them again for a long time. Let me share to you my experience on my One Direction: On The Road Again Tour Concert: When the lads disappeared in the stage, Best Song Ever played and the fireworks filled the sky, that was the time I felt my knees weaken the most. Most of the people around me were saying, "Okay, they're leaving," but my mind couldn't fathom everything that was going on. I almost collapsed, and if I could only fly, I wouldn't hesitate to go to them and tell them to come back and just never leave.

But that's not the way things should be, of course. As a fan, you need to accept that you're not the only one in their list. As artists, they signed up to entertain people and surely, their fanbase isn't just consisting of only one person a.k.a. You. With that saying, you need to accept that yes, you may be seeing them, but they're not entirely yours to hold forever. Besides, what are fans for? To support them in all their endeavors, right?

Stage 3: Go on

Let's go crazy, crazy, crazy ‘till we see the sun

I know we only met but let’s pretend it’s love

And never, never, never stop for anyone

Tonight, let’s get some

And live while we’re young.

-- Live While We’re Young, One Direction

The best way to accomplish this step is to keep you occupied. Surely, the thought of the concert might haunt you, safely saying, every once in a while, but don’t let it get through your normal flow of activities. Never let your daydreaming keep you from finishing your assignments and requirements for school, or even running errands for your parents. Yes, you love your idols, but keep in mind that they’re not the only people in your life.

Go on with your life! The concert experience will always leave a special mark in your hearts and thoughts, and leave it like that. Never stress yourself due to overthinking whether you might see them again or not. Remember, “if it’s meant to be, it will be.” Just live your normal live, with a new inspiration in mind. Who knows? As time passes by, all your efforts may pay off and you can see them again, face to face, one on one? That’ll be totally great!

“Never underestimate a girl’s love for her favorite band. Never think even for a minute, that she won’t defend them to her death. Because it’s not just the music that makes that band her favorite. It’s the guys, the gals. It’s the fans. People whom of which she has interacted with thanks to the band. That band might of saved her life, or just made her smile everyday. That band has never broke her heart and has yet to leave her. No wonder she finds such joy in her music.” - Alex Gaskarth
